In the world of stardom where celebrities are surrounded by the paparazzi 24×7, it becomes a tad bit difficult to cope up with the status of being a known face. Even a walk to the nearby coffee shop becomes a pain for them as they are celebrated figures and people swarm like flies just to catch a glimpse of them. Apart from that, the dark side of success sometimes takes a heavy toll on these celebrities and they are unable to cope up with life’s demands and hence end up taking their life. Here is a list of 10 celebrities who couldn’t handle the lifestyle of the rich and famous and committed suicide.
10) Gia Allemand –
Born in December, 1983, Gia Allemand was an American actress, model and reality show contestant appearing in many shows such as The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love and Bachelor Pad. She has also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where she talked about her life as a reality contestant in The Bachelor. On August 2103, she was found hanging at her house and was rushed to a nearby hospital. However, she was declared brain dead. At the time of her death, she was living in New Orleans with her boyfriend Ryan Anderson. She was 29 years old.
9) Mary Kay Bergman –
Known by many as an American actress and comedian, Mary Kay Bergman was also a voice actor and has many commercials as well as television shows to her credit. She has lended her voice to over 400 commercials and is widely famous for being the voice of many female characters of the hit show South Park. When her mother was diagnosed with Cancer, Bergman’s Bipolar Disorder which had been going on for long was thought to be a reaction of her mother’s illness. However later, she confessed about her insecurity and distress to her husband and they planned a getaway to Vegas in order to make her feel better. However, a week later she was found dead by her husband. She shot herself with a 12 Gauge shotgun.
8) Isabella Blow –
Isabella Blow was an English Magazine Editor and muse to famous hat designer Philip Treacy. She is also believed to have found the talent of Alexander McQueen and many models too. She had established a great relationship with McQueen and was one of the main reasons behind Gucci acquiring McQueen’s brand. However, their relationship took a turn when McQueen started avoiding her and didn’t include her in the whole process of selling his brand. This made Blow feel very sad and vulnerable as her financial conditions were also deteriorating. While all this was going on, she also came to know that she was infertile and couldn’t have her own babies. To make matters worse, she learned that she had ovarian cancer. She attempted suicide many times – by overdosing on sleeping pills, jumping from a flyover, driving her car into a truck and even tried to drown in a lake. However, finally in May, 2007 she was found dead by her sister on the bathroom floor. She had overdosed on a weed killer. She was 48.
7) Freddy E –
He was a well-known comedian and YouTube star where he posted videos of himself and got around 100,000 views on each of his video. He was very famous in Seattle from where he originally belonged. On January 5, 2013, he live tweeted what he was going through before shooting himself. A number of tweets like “If there’s a God then He’s calling me back home. This barrel never felt so good next to my dome. It’s cold & I’d rather die than live alone,” and “It’s… all… bad… y’all. *puts finger around trigger*” were posted to his twitter account. Although everyone believed that the reason behind his death was his girlfriend Honey Cocaine, she denied the accusations and informed everyone that she loved him and wouldn’t hurt him. This is one of the rare incidents where a person had live tweeted their death.
6) Lucy Gordon –
Born in May 1980, Lucy Gordon was a British actress and model. She made her film debut in Perfume which released in 2001. Even though she was not that successful, she did manage to score small roles in films like Spider Man 3, The Four Feathers and Serendipity among many others. On May 2009, she was found hanging in her Paris flat. She had left 2 suicide notes – one for her parents and the other regarding details about her estate and her will.
5) Chris Benoit –
Chris Benoit was a Canadian wrestler and had won many accolades for his performance such as WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and a one-time World Heavyweight Champion in WWE. Benoit’s personal life was not doing well as his second wife, Nancy had filed for divorce citing reasons such as ‘cruel treatment’. She alleged that he used to beat her and throw things at her, but later dropped the charges against him. In June 2007, after missing many sessions with the court, the police went to his house only to discover three dead bodies. Benoit had killed his wife and son before committing suicide. After a lot of research on his brain, it was found out that years of trauma he suffered as a child led to his brain being damaged. He had an advanced form of dementia.
4) Lupe Velez –
Born in July, 1908 Lupe Velez was a Mexican actress and the first one to successfully venture into Hollywood as well. She had done films like Lady of the Pavements, The Wolf Sang, Laughing Boy, Hollywood Party etc. which were loved by the audience. She also has many silent films to her credit including The Wolf Sang and Where East is East. Despite her success as an actress in both Mexican industry as well as Hollywood, it was her personal life that had taken a toll. She had many affairs and wasn’t shy to share it with the world. Her most scandalized affair was with Gary Cooper, who was an actor too. They lived together in their mansion in Beverly Hills but had a stormy relationship. Due to her uncontrollable rage, she threatened Cooper many times and even tried to harm him with a knife and a gun. He escaped but broke up which was hard to deal for Velez. After many troubled relationships and a shameful pregnancy, she decided to end her life as many people believe she didn’t want to give birth to a child out of wedlock. She consumed 580 sleeping pills and died in her sleep.
3) Alexander McQueen –
Born in 1969, Lee Alexander McQueen was a celebrated British fashion designer who started his own collection of luxurious clothing. His company was purchased by Gucci which landed him a great deal and his stores opened in all high end cities including New York, London, Los Angeles, Milan etc. He has always remained a favorite of many stars and celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker etc. A week or so after his mother’s death, McQueen started feeling low and was struggling to keep up with his life. A week or two later it was discovered that he had committed suicide and was found hanging at his home in London. People close to him said that his mother’s death affected him a lot and he had started taking drugs to cope up with the loss. His funeral was attended by many celebrities and artists like Lady Gaga have also paid tribute to him through music videos, films etc. He continues to be a celebrated designer even after his death and has left a huge impact on the fashion industry with his ideas and design.
2) Kurt Cobain –
Lead singer of the famous band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain was an American artist and musician. The band gained a lot of success with songs like ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ providing them a breakthrough in the music industry. However, all was not well in Cobain’s personal life as his addiction to drugs had taken a turn for worse. He was hooked onto pills and even went to rehab but it didn’t solve anything. During a tour stop, Cobain had to be admitted to the hospital due to bronchitis and severe laryngitis. His wife joined him the next day as he was to go under medical treatment. The next morning Love found Cobain lying on his bed without any pulse. He overdosed on champagne and Rohypnol. This left a huge impact on their relationship. Courtney love, his wife alleged that Cobain had become suicidal and had once locked himself in a room with a gun. However when the police came, he simply stated that he was trying to get away from Love. Finally on April 8, 1994 Cobain’s body was found near his home by an electrician. He had shot himself and left a suicide note for his imaginary childhood friend.

One of the most famous and iconic celebrity of the 20th century, Marilyn Monroe had a very tumultuous life. Although she was renowned celebrity in Hollywood, her personal life was a struggle. She had many failed romances and relationships with a lot of men. She was married thrice which left a deep impact on her, psychologically. She was also involved with John and Robert Kennedy, and had suffered miscarriages twice. All this coupled with the fame and success of being a celebrity took a toll on her and she consumed poison and was found dead at her home in California.
