Horror genre movies are always liked by the younger generation. And it becomes more interesting when you get scared and your heart starts beating up at a faster rate. But if the movie is based on a true event it makes it more jarring to have an experience viewing the whole story through the movie. Making a movie based on reality is something which can’t be imagined as it is more frightening. Many think the label” based on true events” is just to seek attention from the viewers but there are such crazy things that happen with many people out there. People die or are violated in many horrible and scary ways. And to get the audience to know about such horror events movies are made which at times do scare you and not let you sleep at night. The below list are about some of the most horrific movies that have been inspired by the real events happening with people:
10. THE STRANGERS
The movie stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple who are attacked in their summer home. They are tortured, beaten and then killed by the unknown strangers whose motive is just to inflict harm on others. After killing the people they are never been caught. This horror flick was believed to be based on the personal experience of the director “Bryan Bertino” himself. According to him in his childhood, some strangers came to the door and asked about the persons who did not live there and if nobody opened the door they would simply break into the home to rob it which scared him.
9. OPEN WATER
A psychological horror movie depicting the common human fear of open water and sharks was inspired by the real life American couple Tom and Eileen Lonergon who were on a scuba diving expedition and accidentally got separated from their group after which they were not to be found anywhere. There was no actual evidence of sharks attacking them but even there bodies were not found anywhere after that incident, so the film director Chris Kentis fictionalized some of the events by pointing towards the sharks attacking the couple.
8. THE ZODIAC
The movie was directed by David Fincher based on the true crime events books written by Robert Gray-smith who was a cartoonist during the time of Zodiac Killer. The serial killer named “Zodiac” used to kill people and leave several victims in his wake and disturbed the police leaving letters behind. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the character of Gray-smith, as a sweet wonk i.e a political cartoonist, whose obsession with the cases surpasses that both of the ace cop as well as the reporter targeted by the notorious serial killer. Fincher, screenwriter James Vanderbilt and producer Brad Fisher spent 18 months for investigating about these zodiac murders.
7. THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACARE
Tobe Hooper directed the movie which took inspiration from events of the real life murderer Ed Gein who used human skin to upholst furniture and make clothes. He actually murdered two people but the way he used the human skins to make masks, trinkets, furniture from their bones and skin was clearly a horrific feature showcased through this movie along with “Psycho” and “The silence of the lambs”. Although the major plot of this movie such as the chainsaw style murders and the backwoods invert family part was considered to be entirely fictional but the minor plot and the character of Leather face was based on the true events.
6. DEAD RINGER’S
Directed by Canadian director David Cronenburg, this horror flick is about two identical twin gynecologists played by Jeremy Irons whose obsession with each other turns out to be disturbing. The movie was inspired by two identical twins Stewart and Cyril Marcus who exchanged each others places of professional and personal lives. But suddenly their lives started going out of control because of which they both committed suicide in their Manhattan apartment.
5. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE
An American horror film directed by Scott Derrickson is based on the true event which occurred with a German Catholic girl Anneliese Michel changing her name to Emily Rose. It was believed she was diagnosed with epilepsy which she and the other two priests reinterpreted as a full on possession, she was suffering from serious mental conditions. The priest was accused by the state of negligent homicide after he performed a four hour exorcism on Anneliese for about 67 times in 10 months before she died of starvation. But many people believe she died a martyr after being possessed.
4. CHILD’S PLAY
This horror flick was directed Tom Holland in which a serial killer uses some kind of magical rituals and transfers his soul into a doll possessing as a child’s toy. This movie was inspired by the real life magical vendetta that a Jamaican nurse practiced on Key West painter and Robert Eugene Otto who gave Robert the Doll to Otto eventually turning against her only and cursed it. The doll used to talk and move with Otto as a child and he even used to scream while sleeping at night. After Otto passed away the doll was left behind who gelled up with new home comers and those people claimed that the doll could move and tried to kill them. Today, the doll is preserved in a museum of Key West.
3. THE GIRL NEXT DOOR
Adapted from the novel of the same name written by Jack Ketchum which is loosely said to be based on true life events happened with a girl named Sylvia Likens during 1965 who was brutally tortured and murdered by Gertrude Baniszewski. The story revolves around a girl who gets kidnapped, tortured, raped and mutilated in the basement by her neighborhood kids. The movie seems to be sadistic and really disturbing and what is more scariest was that according to the crime files is that the story written by Ketchum was not of any imagination.
2. HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER
Being one of the most brutal and violent movie directed as well as co written by John McNaughton, it is based on true events depicting about the real life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas which makes it more shocking for the audience. The character of nomadic killer Henry Lucas was played by Micheal Rooker. In spite of some details being changed, the movie is a dramatic fictionalization of period of time of Henry’s life along with the core of the story being real. This real life killer confessed to murder around 600 people claiming of committing one murder every week. But it is believed that the confession Lucas made were false as it would ensure him better conditions in jail and the law would offer him incentives to confess the crimes he never committed. Although still being a mystery how many people did Henry really murdered the movie is very dark and disturbing bringing chills to your body.
1.THE AMITYVILLE HORROR
The movie is a supernatural horror genre based on the best selling 1977 novel of the same name written by Jay Anson. The story revolves around the true horrific events experienced by the Lutz family in their new home on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. According to a source, there was a mass murder, committed a year before they shifted here and after they moved into the house, the family started experiencing a series of frightening paranormal activities like demonic images, walls bleeding green slimes, disembodied voices etc. Although there is only a little evidence regarding what actually happened with the family, the movie fairly tries to tell what the Lutz suffered through. Somewhere later, Kathy Lutz in an interview told that the entire stay in the home with family was made up for publicity but some of her family members did not support her statement.
