For LGB’s (Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual) , daily living is sadly a frustrating and painful experience in our society even today in 21st century when people are no more ignorant and illiterate. Oppressing homosexuality and efforts to cure it has been observed in almost all corners of the world for the only reason that they don’t identify themselves as heterosexuals. And what in this world has given the people right to pass judgement on the ones who have a preferred sexual orientation which is different from theirs? Their society, educational background, religious beliefs or their shallow lifestyle because the fact is, much of these judgements are based upon the myths that need to be dispelled.
It’s quite disappointing when you see the “generation next” possessing the same irrational fear and hatred for intimate, same-sex relationships and yet claiming to have revolutionised and become even more sensible. To get rid of homophobia it is necessary for people to realise some facts and let go of the myths mentioned below and make a difference in the lives of those who suffer.
Myth 10 – Sexual orientation is a choice
Fact – Sexual orientation of gays is not a decision made by choice and truth be known that its not something they have chosen for themselves rather it is self-discovered from early childhood. Homosexuality is not a choice, there are evidences that states the fact that homosexuality is partly genetic and biologically based. Sexual orientation cannot be taught or changed as Homosexuals discover their sexual preference much against their will when they reach the age of puberty and they are definitely not driven into the so-called ‘gay lifestyle. I have many gay friends and trust me the continuous pressure mounting upon them have made them say in their weak times that in this very society we live in, if they had a choice to make they would much rather prefer to be a heterosexuals.
Myth 9 – Homosexuality is a mental disorder
Fact – Hypothalamus of homosexual men is different from that of heterosexual men. In recent years many scientists have shown impressive growth in genetic and biological research and with the help of improved technology have successfully determined the possible cause of homosexuality. They observed that the part of the brain which is linked to sexual preference was smaller in size in homosexual men when compared to the size of heterosexual males. The size of anterior hypothalamus of gay men is similar to the size of women’s hypothalamus. It was discovered that when the growing fetus is introduced by the sex hormones, it is more likely to affect the size of the hypothalamus in the adult which in turn affects their sexual orientation.
Myth 8 – All homosexuals are born gays
Fact – Although sexual orientation is not an adaptation but there are so many studies that prove that homosexuality in some people are the result of the parental interaction, emotional attention, environmental connection and hormonal change. Many scientists have discovered that homosexuality in some humans are inborn whereas in some others it shapes up with time to some extend depending upon the family structure, parents, siblings and friends role in the social life of an individual. It has also been observed that during the growing age if males are castrated then the testosterone levels decreases in their system and when they reach maturity they tend to behave in a more feminine way.
Myth 7 – All animals are straight
Fact – There are so many people who hold the belief that homosexuality isn’t natural and in only male-female pairing people can establish a natural relationship. Contradicting this popular perception, scientists have discovered that there are more than 1500 species in our animal kingdom that exhibits homosexual behaviour. Lions, Penguins, dolphins, swans, giraffes, and monkeys are some of the species that practice homosexuality. Animal’s behaviour is determined by their natural instincts and clearly they are not influenced by the very modern culture. So it’s not just humans that are homosexuals, symptoms of homosexuality has also been noticed even in animals which I hope now clears the unsubstantiated belief and can help people view homosexuality in the light of possible change in perception.
Myth 6 – Homosexuality is a different gender
Fact – This is the most hilarious myth people are driven by and why wouldn’t it be funny when forget about the illiterate, the educated masses altogether consider homosexuality a different gender. It’s for those who were sleeping in the class when the science teacher was teaching about embryology. So it’s a revision class in which we can tell you that all the early embryos start out as female. Genetically, homosexuals and heterosexuals are exactly the same. The “XX” pair of chromosome is present only in females and the other pair of chromosome is “XY” and is only found in males. The mother always contributes the “X” and the father can contribute either an “X” or a “Y”. Homosexual men are in possession of “XY” pairs of chromosomes that showcase male characteristics in all possible aspects of a gender identification.
Myth 5. – Being gay is unnatural and therefore they are unsuccessful, poor and unhappy
Fact – Gay couples are financially much better off than straight couples. Lesbians and gay men render service in a diverse variety of careers. They are creative and intellectually smart and they are mainly taking up careers in fashion, medicine and education. According to a survey, the average household income of gay men is $83,000 per year and the lesbians earn $80,000 per year. The gay couples and lesbian partners earn $130,000 & $96,000. They work, enjoy, party and are also very happy in their respective lives and of course they are not cursed in any way for being who they are. Now those who think that they are living a miserable life should try to have a close check on the fact that shouts out loud the reality about their success and happiness.
Myth 4 – Homosexuals can be changed
Fact – Efforts to change sexual orientation can prove to be harmful. It can break a person mentally and psychologically. Most LGB persons have no desire to change their sexual orientation. However, some homosexuals try to ignore there natural instincts and reluctantly become straight to get an acceptance from the society. It should be known that there exist no effective therapeutic measures which can cure homosexuality because it is not a disease or disorder. The typical so called “heterosexuals” who believe gays can change and want them to get rid of their homosexuality ought to know that they themselves are the ones in need of a change in the first place and if they change atall then I am sure this world would be a better place to breathe in.
Myth 3 – Homosexuals are abnormal, unhealthy and they are sick
Fact – For goodness sake, people need to know that homosexuals are not abnormal, physically unhealthy or sick in any way and they don’t need medical aid. Indulging to cure homosexuality is similar of trying to make a black look like a white or change the colour of the eyes a person is born with. You can hide the blue colour of eyes with the lens just as any gay would try to conceal their natural instincts and become straight in order to overcome the burden of societal pressure on him and his family. Sexual orientation does not need treatment to be cured, like that of the diseases so stop trying to make them feel sick, they are not.
Myth 2 – Gay parents aren’t as good as a father and a mother
Fact – Gay parenting is as good for a child’s upbringing as is straight parenting. There are much oppositions that a gay couple face when wanting to adopt a child because the negative stereotypes in our society feels that only a father and mother can raise a healthy child. Research has proved that a child raised by homosexual parents fare no differently than the child who is bought up by straight couples. For starters, children raised by gay or lesbian parents are not likely to be gay themselves as it has already been stated that homosexuality is not contagious. They are also unlikely to experience problems in relationships when compared with heterosexual parents. The bottom line is – research has manifested the fact that gay parents are as capable of providing love and support to their children as are straight couples.
Myth 1 – Gay men desire to dress and act like women and gay women wish they were born men.
Fact –There is a very common opinion people share about homosexuals that they have a strong desire to change their gender as gay men love to look like females and gay women like to dress like males whereas the truth is they are satisfied with their sex and they have no desire to convert it. Gays are absolutely comfortable with their gender and are not driven to change it just because they have same sex preference. There are some gay men who dress up as women but it’s just for the drag shows. Men who find it alluring to dress up as women are known as crossdressers and it should be known that they are heterosexuals and the women who dresses and behaves like men are tom boys and even they are not necessarily gays.
