10 Qualities you must have to become a Teacher

Article by ,

“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together”, well truly said by Scott Hayden. A teacher must have enormous love towards education and the ones who are interested in learning and should have ability of creating a balance between the two. Undoubtedly, one of the toughest jobs is to serve society by being a teacher. You need to have certain qualities inherent in you so as to become a one. Let us go through this list of 10 important qualities you need to have to become a good teacher.

10.   Role Model

A good teacher must be a role model for his students. You should set some examples so that students have sense of respect for you and thus can learn from you. You can talk about your hardships or any of your rough experience. You can guide your students for your career, show them different avenues.

9. Communication Skills

Students have a tendency to gauge you on the basis of your communication skills. You must be very fluent, clear and confident about what you speak. In fact, you have to be choosy about your words because a student while learning any topic tries to adapt your way of talking and explaining.

8. Patience

To be a good teacher, you must have enormous patience in your behavior. You can cultivate this quality yourself. You will often find some students who imitate certain lines used frequently by you and make fun of it among their friends. Again there will be a few cases, where students may not get whatever you have taught in one go or even thrice, you must be patient enough to explain it again. It is likely that you may lose your temper, but you have to  handle such situations.

7. Efficient Style of Teaching

The next quality on our list which I personally admire most in teachers is their style of teaching. A good teacher is one who has this ability to hone skills in his students efficiently. To accomplish this, you have to choose the most efficient techniques of teaching any lessons so as to capture attention of all the students. You can go for some 3D models to illustrate any phenomena rather than using a 2-D platform like blackboard.

6. Asking Feedback

Some of you may think how is this notion of feedback can help you in becoming a good teacher. This may not count into well-defined qualities for many of you but indeed it is. You must ask for feedback from your students about the balance of your level of teaching and their level of understanding. They are likely to be more open about their problems in the feedback. This will improve both the sides and will create a good bond.

5. Discipline

To enforce discipline among students, you first need to enforce it in yourself. A great teacher has effective discipline skills and can promote positive behaviors and change in the classroom. you must be able to engage students in their studies and at the same time maintain proper decorum inside classrooms.

4.  Approachable

A teacher must be approachable in the sense that he/she is friendly to talk with and have a sense of understanding towards any matter. Until and unless you have this very quality, your students will never be able to talk to you about his difficulties and the purpose of being a teacher will lose its meaning.

3. Knowledge and Love

Quite obvious, but is generally overlooked; you must have a good hold on you subject matter. You must love what you do; and this love must get reflected into your teaching process. Your concepts, reasoning, and illustrations mould the thinking of students. The more you can give examples, the more they can think beyond the texts. Thus they will have a clear picture of their studies and they can love what they are learning.

2. Equality

All students irrespective of the age, sex, caste, religion or economic background must be equal in the eye of a teacher. He must address the issues of all the students without being biased. He must give equal opportunity to each of them.

1.  Enthusiastic and Fun-loving

The countdown ends on this most essential quality which says you must be a fun-loving person with plenty of enthusiasm to be a good teacher. This must be visible in your explanations and discussions. The fact of the matter is, if you are serious 100% of the time, it’ll be much harder for students to care and to really connect with them. Although you don’t need to be laughter show participants, if you are able to create a more fun environment for students, they will likely be more motivated and eager to learn.

A teacher can only make a difference by spreading his ideas and thoughts among the newer generation. It is important to remember that most teachers do not begin their careers with a full complement of these skills; becoming an effective teacher is a process of continual refinement.
