“Oh no! Summers have started”, this is the reaction of every individual when this hot sweltering season arrives. Then you think about the winter season which at least doesn’t make you go crazy all the time. Summer means high temperature and heat which means more use of cooling systems that sends a chill in the spine after looking at the high electricity bills you get. But the most thrilling thought is regarding the global warming which is reaching its peak because of heat reflected on the earth. Many people suffer from heat related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and lot more. Then you feel like staying at home and move out only when the sun has set and there is little bit of wind blowing outside. Since not everybody has the potential to manage their health or work in this boiling season, there are simple ways through which you can keep yourself cool during the summers which are as follows:
1. KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED
It is always said that being dehydrated by drinking plenty of water is always good for your body. But it is more important to keep yourself hydrated during high peak of summers as the blistering heat leaves you exhausted and tired. Since the body loses water every day through urines, skin, intestine and lungs through any physical activity and sweatiness it is necessary to replace those water loss by keeping yourself fully hydrated. Other fluids like sports drinks, juices are also some of the liquids that may help to keep your body cool and healthy. Thus, it is advised to drink atleast 7-8 glasses of water everyday to avoid any kind of dehydration.
9. WEAR LIGHT MAKE-UP AND A WIDE BRIMMED HAT
Every girl likes to look beautiful and trendy be it either by applying make-up or wearing fashionable dresses. But in summers heavy make-up should be avoided as it will only impede the sweating making you feel warmer. Wear a very light make-up and foundation or substitute it with a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen. and if possible try applying waterproof make-up as sweating caused can spread it all over your face. To avoid direct sun-rays and heat wear a wide-brimmed hat as it will help you to be in shade and feel cool on the face at least.
8. AVOID CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL
Most of the people have the habit of drinking alcohol and every individual loves to have coffee or tea but these should be avoided in the summers because they are diuretics which causes dehydration and heat related illnesses. Mainly, the consumption of alcohol should be avoided because the more you consume alcohol the harder it gets to recognize whether you will suffer from heart related illness. So better think about the consequences before consuming them.
7. USE A THINNER BLANKET
For a good night and comfortable sleep, blankets generally called as quilts or duvets are needed both in winters as well as summers. Blankets are filled with some materials that provide insulation in winters also impede the airflow during summers that helps to keep us cool. Loosely woven blankets or thermal blankets are specially designed for making us feel cool even during the extreme summers as it allows the sweat to evaporate as you sleep in the hot room. You can even place a cool wet yet dry blanket under your bed sheet so that you can sleep comfortably getting a cool sensation.
6. TAKE FREQUENT BATHS
Once you start bathing in summers, you feel like staying under the cold water shower for long as it gives you a cool feeling from within the body itself. But that is not possible for anybody because you got a lot of other works to do. Be it be a child, a working person or a home-maker, in summers everybody gets tired and sweats after the physical activity being done all day. As in summers, the humidity and moisture is usually high so, to get rid of the tiredness and sweatiness you can have bath at least 2 or 3 times a day. This will not only make you feel fresh but will also let you keep cooler the whole day. In morning you can go for cold water, but at night it is advised to take a little tepid water shower after the tiresome day as it will get rid away of all your tiredness from the body. And if you want to have a relaxed day then you can even go for a spa in your spare day so as to make your body feel refreshing and cool at least for few days.
5. EAT SPICY FOOD
Strange to hear isn’t it? But it is true that eating spicy foods on the hot days of summer helps to keep your body cool. The reason behind this is that just like physical activity makes you sweat digesting spicy food also raises your body temperature according to the outside temperature which increases the blood circulation making you sweat. And because your body moisture gets evaporated, you automatically feel cool from inside.
4. HAVE COOL REFRESHING BEVERAGES
Its summer time and not having cool beverages doesn’t add to the season. Just as the temperature increases, your thirst also increases. Like it is said before that water will help you keep hydrated but having cold beverages will make you feel more refreshing and cooler. Whether relaxing at home or hanging out with friends or at work you can have your favorite cold drinks or icy- pops. The best quintessential summer drink which comes to the mind first is non other than fresh squeezed lemonade which has been a part of every household for long and is still being preferred by everyone. Other options such as a glass of chilled iced tea, tang, fruit juices can be made and served at home itself whereas cold drinks such as coke, dew, pepsi, sprite and other famous beverages can be purchased and enjoyed. Apart from that ice-cream lovers can have ice cream flavors such as mango, strawberry, vanilla, butterscotch and the list goes on. All these beverages act as a treat from heaven and are the cheapest way to overcome the heat.
3. MOVE DOWN OR OUT
What can be better chance than summer to move out in some cooler place. When your roof gets hotter due to the extreme heat temperature outside, your basement remains the coolest place in your house. Or the best way to cool off your body when the heat is at its peak is to go to a mall or a movie theater where it is fully air-conditioned and you can relax and even enjoy the whole day and go back home when the sun sets and its little cool outside.
2. WET YOUR PULSE POINTS AND WRISTS WITH ICE
Wetting up your pulse points and wrists will help your body to stay cool for long. You can even run your wrists under cold water and sprinkle the water on face. But The best way to let the coolness stay is by wrapping up some ice in a facecloth and apply it on your face along with the wrists to continue using as this relief stays for an hour so you can relax comfortably. According to some research, this technique helps in cooling off the body temperature by 3*F which is equal to 1.5 *C.
1.WEAR LOOSE AND LIGHT COLORED CLOTHES
In hot weather our bodies sweat which evaporates and makes the skin cool and body temperature decreases. Tight fitting clothes keep the heat trapped inside the body surface that can lead to heat exhaustion. So it is recommended to wear loose clothes such as made of cotton as well as light colored clothes as it will not only let you feel cool from inside but will also reflect back the heat whereas the dark colored clothes absorb a lot of heat and leads to discomfort and more sweating. Loose clothing increases air circulation stimulating the sweat evaporation and preventing any kind of heat illnesses. And if possible try to cover the face with a scarf to avoid tanning.
