Andy Rooney had said,” Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives.”
Teachers are the some of the most underpaid according to their profession because they are not just educators they are role models as well. They are the lighthouses guiding our wayward, immature minds to safe shores. They are the figures that inspire us to realize the potential we never knew we had by constantly pushing us to expand our limits and perform the best that we can. They may be strict, berate us or be killjoys but every teacher, whether we it is all supporting, but very rigid Mr. Miyagi from karate kid, beautiful, kind and understanding Sushmita sen from Main hoon na or the eccentric but highly intelligent, rule breaking Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter, teaches us valuable life skills for which we will be forever grateful.
5th of September is officially celebrated as a teacher’s day when we thank all out teachers and mentors for their role in our lives. So why is it that we dedicate just one day a year to our second extended family of parents to acknowledge their contribution in molding the futures of hundreds of students.
Our parents take care of just us but teachers take care of an entire batch! And more often than not they don’t get the appreciation that they deserve and expect. So why wait for just teacher’s day to make your favourite teacher realize how much he/she means to you?
Teachers are priceless and special and here is a list of ten things we can do to make them realize it too.
10. Gift of appreciation
Correcting a hundred mark sheets, remembering all our names; our strengths and weaknesses working hard to shine us diamonds in the rough is no mean feat. A small gift of appreciation- it could be something they like, a goodie basket or a personalized card depicting your time spent together and how much you are indebted to them for their counsel and priceless advice, for their wisdom and experiences which have piloted your decisions for your future, goes a long way in showing that you care and appreciate them and would brighten their day!
9. Teacher’s day
The one special day to commemorate teachers all over the nation, 5th September the birthday of Dr Radhakrishnan, one of the greatest teachers our country has seen is celebrated as teacher’s day. During my school days we would have an official grandiose celebration by the school management where we would dedicate speeches, give gifts and sing songs for them. Even management understood the importance of that one day where being a teacher is celebrated. So no matter how busy you are the small act of wishing your teacher and an effort to celebrate it on his/her day would make it worthwhile for them.
8. A thank you message:
Times have changed now, the generation gap between the teachers and students has almost disappeared and consequently so has the rapport changed. Our teachers have now become our friends and our confidantes. From sharing anecdotes and relating to our lives to hanging out as friends and being facebook buddies, the divide of teacher and student is all but gone. Sending a small message of thanks or a sweet note to tell them how much they mean to you would be a small but very touching gesture and make them feel appreciated. Even if it is just a random message, it would make a difference to let them know that they are remembered.
7. Remembering Birthdays
I will never forget the feeling of elation I always experienced when I would stand in front of my class and the entire class would wish me a happy birthday. Remembering special occasions like birthdays and taking the initiative to wish them and celebrate it makes them feel special. A surprise gathering, a fully fledged party or just a simple cake cutting ceremony, being there for them on their special day is how we can make them feel good and special. So find out tomorrow when is her/his birthday and ensure you make it memorable for her/him!
6. Keep in touch
Teachers and mentors are responsible to a great extent for shaping our characters and helping us hone our talents. Why would you ever want to lose such influences? Keeping in touch with those few teachers, and taking the time to meet up or talk to them in it is a priceless lesson. The fact that we are taking efforts to remain in regular communication shows how much of an impression they have made on you and that you will cherish their support and help throughout our lives. Even if not of blood, we still are their kids and maintaining relationships would make them happy. It could be a call when you are free to remind them they are still in your thoughts or a surprise visit to school to meet them!
5. Follow their teachings and dedicate your success to their efforts
The best way to make your mentor or teacher feel special is to follow their teachings stringently and be the best that we can be as nothing would give them greater pleasure than the knowledge that their students have become successful and doing well in life. Every teacher wishes the best for his/her student and their achievements is always a source of pride for the teachers. Dedicating your success in life to your teacher’s guidance and counsel would certainly make them feel on top of the world! The next time you go to your reunion make sure to tell your mathematics teacher how he made you love the subject you always dreaded or thank your gym teacher for being patient with you.
4. Celebrate together
Teachers are after all our second family, as just as we celebrate festivals and special occasions with our friends and family, inviting our teachers to be a part of the celebration is a small but beautiful token of the respect and deference you have for them. Calling them for your birthday dinner, after graduation convocation party, or your tournament victory celebration, it would mean a lot to them to be able to celebrate your life’s milestones with you.
3. Paying attention in class
This is far by the simplest but also the best way to make any teacher feel special! It makes your teachers happy and also serves the dual purpose of keeping parents happy as well. It sounds too plain and facile, but sometimes just a small action can make a large impression. A silent, attentive and eager class is every teacher’s ultimate fantasy so an effort to listen to them and study hard would definitely make their lives much easier!
2. A Heartfelt thank you
Extending deadlines on project submissions, giving grace marks to help us pass, leaving us with just a warning when we commit pranks, writing a kick-ass letter of recommendation, teachers help us wade through a marshy student life sometimes at the cost of greatly increasing their own workload. They do much more for us than we can endeavor to understand. A regular gesture, even a personal thank you for a little thing that may have simplified our work would go a long way in ensuring that they feel special and realize that we are appreciative of their work.
1. A simple and sweet greeting
As kids we always had a compulsory rule to stand up and wish our teachers whenever they entered the classrooms to show our respect. It is just a greeting, an act of paying reverence to our elders and imparters of knowledge. So not just in the class but a greeting in the hallway, the teacher’s lounge, in the canteen, or wherever you meet them would show your regard. So the next time you are cantering about in the hallway and your teachers pass by, just say a ‘Good morning teacher. How do you do?’ and watch a smile appear across their faces.
