Train journey can be an amazing experience for people who know how to make the best of it. Knowing how to spend time is a skill that is required if you want to survive a long train journey or else you may die of boredom! I am a frequent train traveler and as I did my fair share of train travel, I can give you some really good ideas to pass time in a train journey. These ideas may come handy the next time you travel by train. There are so many things to do when you are going off to some place on a train. I have picked 10 ways to pass time while travelling in a train
Catch some sleep on the train. You can always use some extra sleep. Imagine having a good tight sleep in a new place with strangers around you. Doesn’t it sound amazing? Besides, it is one of the best ways to pass time. I feel that sleeping in train listening to soft music accompanied by the rhythm of the moving train is one of the best experiences we can have in life. And if you are in a sleeper compartment you can just lie down comfortably, close your eyes and spend some time thinking of wonderful things that make you happy with some background music if you prefer. Remember that if you have valuables like laptop, camera or an expensive mobile phone, put them all in a separate bag and keep it close to you while sleeping.
9. Random Activities
You can indulge yourself in activities of your preference like doing crossword puzzles, Sudoku, playing with young children who are travelling with you and singing songs along with them. I remember making origami crafts with waste papers and throwing out of the window during one of my travels. You can also watch a movie on a portable dvd player if you have one. You can observe the things and people around you and do some sketching if you are interested. I learned to solve Rubik’s cube while I was travelling in a train! Rubik’s cube is also a good time pass in a journey. If your mobile service is available then you can text your friends and have a brief chat. If you have a source of internet, you can do some social networking and post updates about your travel.
8. Picnic or Party!
Pack some food and drinks. Grab your own picnic stuff and have some fun on the train. Or you can order the food on the train itself. You can eat, drink and celebrate life with a small picnic. If you are travelling with a bunch of close friends then you can even organize a train party without causing any disturbance to others. I once had to travel during the New Year night on a train with my family and friends. Me and my friends bought a New Year cake secretly before getting on the train and surprised our parents at midnight. We had our own train New Year Party and it was a great night!
7. Taking Photographs
I always carry my camera when travelling. I suggest you to carry yours too. You’ll get a chance to capture some of the most beautiful scenes that you don’t see around you in your daily life. These will definitely serve as the best memories of train travel. Being a constant traveler I have enjoyed a lot taking pictures of places that I come across during my journey. My most favourite was when I managed to photograph the amazing waterfall ‘Doodh Sagar’ from a moving train. Trust me, the thrill is incomparable to anything. You can have your own travel album and compile photos of your travel experiences! You can even upload them on social networking sites and share your experiences with your friends.
6. Writing a Travel Diary
This is a very great idea if you travel a lot. You can keep with you a diary or journal to write about memorable things you encounter in your train trip. You can write about people you meet and things you see from a train window! And who knows, you may even get to publish it one day! You can also take your journey as an inspiration to write a story or an article. Always keep a small book with you to scribble things that pop into your mind when you are travelling in a train. When you read those in later years, you will be amused that you had such thoughts!
5. Games and Fun
This is what most of us do! Play games on portable gaming system and cell phone. When you get bored with your mobile apps, you can go for analog games. You can carry small fold-away travel games like chess and play with fellow passengers. Card games are also so much fun in train journeys. I always play lot of UNO when I travel by train! You can also play guessing games, observation games, bingo, word and memory games etc. You can also play games on your laptop if you carry one.
4. Making New Friends
Start a conversation with your fellow passengers and befriend them. Having a good chat with your neighbour can relieve you from boredom. You can make new friends and can learn new things from them. It is a good opportunity to know about different types of people. If you wish to continue your friendship you can exchange your email id with that person. But be careful not to trust and give away personal things about you to a complete stranger. Trains are definitely great places to make friends but you must be careful to pick the right people!
If you want to spend your time profitably then you can go for reading books. The most important thing is to select the right book for the journey. The book you take along with you is going to be your best travel companion. So choose a book that you think you’ll enjoy reading! According to me, train is one of the ideal locations to indulge in your book reading. If you want a quite atmosphere around you, it is best to spend a few more bucks for first class travel. You can even study some literary works in such quietness. If you are not keen on reading books then you can get magazines. Comics are also fine. Reading is a productive way of passing your time in a journey.
Don’t forget to carry your ipod or mp3 player with you. Music will get you going in the journey. It helps to relax and refresh your mood. Music is not only good for your mood but it also has a special tendency to bind to all the moments and incidents you go through. The next time you listen to the same music you did in your travel, the memories of the journey come into your mind! It’ll be lot of fun for you to create your own train playlist with a theme you like in that situation. Listening to music in a moving train is like escaping into a world of your own and leaving behind all the burdens of life in reality. If you don’t like noises in the background you can consider getting noise-cancelling headphones.
1. Window Gazing!
There’s nothing like gazing out of a moving train. It’s such a pleasure to watch as different places go by. You get a chance to immerse yourself in the country’s culture and the elegance of the land. You can even get a glimpse of interesting sceneries of nature. Involve yourself in a little window gazing and watch people from different territories. You’ll surely find many captivating things. The time passes by without your knowledge! This is one of the reasons most people prefer to sit in the seat next to the window.
