Bollywood- our big, beloved industry has never stopped to command our love and respect for it. We Indians swear by Bollywood. Hindi films are something we all have grown up watching. No matter how much we adore Hollywood sci fis and rom coms, we can never ignore our love for Hindi cinema. I feel obliged to be able to write something like this. In the last 100 glorious years of Hindi cinema, we have seen lakhs and lakhs of Hindi films. Picking out 10 best Hindi films from them is a nearly impossible task. So I selected 10 films which were loved by one and all. At least, I loved them!
10. Rang De Basanti
This film redefined patriotism among the youth. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was absolutely brilliant in the way he showed how a bunch of idle college students whose only motto in life was to have fun, stood up against the corruption of the country and finally how they sacrificed their lives for the same. The flashbacks to the pre independence period and their relation to the current generation were amazing. He showed how today’s youth, however disinterested they are towards the country’s politics and development, still have it in them to stand up against the corruption and bring about a change. The brilliant cast made it all the more believable and a worth watch. Not to forget A. R Rahman’s s soulful tunes, which was the film’s soul.
9. Chupke Chupke
This Hrishikesh Mukherjee was a cult laugh riot and we still go back to watch this film time and again. The eye candy Dharmendra and ever gorgeous Sharmila Tagore rocked together in this film which still remains a landmark in Hindi cinema. The series of pranks, the fun moments, the music- nothing was wrong about this film. The plot was super fun and so ahead of its time. Who can forget that appearance of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan? All in all, we can never have enough of this movie.
8. Dil Chahta Hai
This movie pretty much summed up the entire decade from 2000-2009. This cult film on friendship introduced Farhan Akhtar, the director and right from his first venture he has never ceased to amaze us with his amazing talent. This movie was a game changer for Saif Ali Khan and the entire Bollywood industry. Every film that came later was merely trying to live up to the standards set by this film. Every young guy in the country wanted to go on road trips like the protagonists. Dimple Khanna was so elegant hat we fell in love with her charm, again. The fresh and bubbly Preity Zinta awed us too. I can go on and on writing about this particular film, such a classic it was!
7. Jab We Met
We know when it is an Imtiaz Ali film, it has to be quirky, out of the box and extremely heart-warming. Real life sweethearts Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor came together on screen for the last time and how! Every frame of the film was so awesome that years later even when there are reruns on the television, it glues thousands of people to the screen. The chemistry, the music, the story, the characterization everything was so perfect. Geet became the new phenomenon and every girl wanted to be like her. Aditya Kashyap set new standards for guys as every girl wanted to take him home to their mothers. And that kiss in the end, it melted our hearts and we all prayed for this couple to get back together.
6. Chak de India
Shah Rukh Khan- he showed us why he is the real Baadshah. Who thought a game like hockey could get so much adulation when adapted on screen? Sixteen never seen before girls acted and played like no one was watching. Shah Rukh Khan as Kabir Khan, the coach- words will fall short if I start describing him now. After this film suddenly every parent wanted their girl child to learn hockey. Hockey became the new cricket. That final match still gives us goose bumps even so many years later, such powerful were the acting and direction.
5. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Another Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film in the list. Who knew a biopic could do so well? And Farhan Akhtar, man, you seriously command our respect! The transformation from the cute chocolate boy to the flying Sikh shows how dedicated an actor can be towards his profession. This film, though a tad long, proved that we do not mind the length and duration as long as you give us great stuff. The partition scenes brought tears to our eyes and made us shiver what our great grandparents must have gone through during that time. It was a brave move on the part of Milkha Singh to let out his personal life and deep, dark secrets for the world to know, but we really thank him for this bold move.
How do we feel when we look at someone physically challenged? Sympathy? Love? Care? Yes, all of them. But Barfi and Jhilmil made us forgot what sympathy means. Instead, they showed us the true flavours of life and how it should be lived. Shot in the beautiful lanes of Darjeeling and Kolkata, I being from Kolkata, fell in love with my city all over again. Barfi and Jhilmil showed us what unconditional love actually means and how such ‘special’ people make a world of their own- so different from ours! Director Anurag Basu became the man of the year and was adored by one and all.
We know it has to be a brilliant film, when it has Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan. The two acting stalwarts of the industry came together to deliver this masterpiece. Who thought a film can break all records where the lead actress is deaf, dumb and mute? I remember while watching this movie, every page of The Story of My Life by Helen Keller actually came to life. Rani Mukherjee broke all records and was loved by one and all for her brilliant performance. And Amitabh Bachchan, he needs no special mention.
This film actually defined Bollywood in every genre- romance, comedy, drama, action. We were kids when this movie had released and never ever I have seen that amount of craze for a Hindi film. Decades later, even today this movie has millions of loyal viewers during reruns on television. This is one movie which is still alive in our minds through various video spoofs. Each character in the movie, even the villain became so iconic that the stars of Sholay, even at this age wherever they go, are asked questions about their experience and are still mobbed by the crowd.
1. Kal Ho Naa Ho
And with this, we come to the end of this list! Kal Ho Naa Ho is a personal favorite. Shah Rukh Khan reminded us why he is called the King of Romance. This film set new standards when it came to love stories in Bollywood. Every girl, even me, wanted to date Aman and wanted a best friend like Rohit. With an excellent supporting cast, this film was all about those small cinematic moments. From their first meeting, to the opening scene, the marriage scene- each one of it was so memorable that they have been etched in our minds forever.
