“Celebrities” is often an awe inspiring term. We all get star struck when we think about them. For us, celebs occupy a universe of their own, a small little celebrity world which we believe to be completely different from ours. We build their world up to be a kind of a fairy tale land, where anything and everything is possible. While this is the stuff that our fantasies are made of, the reality cannot be more different. Celebrities are people just like you and me. They do things that you and I would do, including going grocery shopping, walks in the park, restaurant day out etc, the only minor difference would probably be that we aren’t hounded by the paparazzi 24×7. The world of celebrities isn’t very much different from ours, and being a celeb does not grant them any magical powers and they too often find themselves caught in the crosshairs of the law. It isn’t totally unheard of to find a celeb behind bars for one reason or another. So let’s have a look at some of the celebs who have seen the inside of a jail cell. (Maybe they are different after all; it’s not often that we find ourselves locked up!)
10. Robert Downey Jr.
Before he became our favourite superhero Iron man or donned the sleuthing hat and pipe to portray the much revered Sherlock Holmes, RDJ was quite the trouble maker. Substance abuse, rehab, relapse, arrests were a part of his daily life. In 1996 he was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded handgun, while speeding down Sunset Boulevard. A month later while on parole he trespassed into a neighbour’s home and fell asleep on their bed, all the while under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to three years probation but on missing a court ordered drug test, Downey was sentenced to six months of prison and Los Angeles County Jail became his temporary home. But eventually he managed to clean up his act, become the successful and charismatic actor, husband and father that he is today.
9. Tim Allen
This yesteryears actor is best known for his role in the sitcom Home Improvement. A well known comedian, he’s made his career out of comedy shows and entertaining people. But some of his actions were thought not so funny by the law. In 1978 at the age of twenty five Tim Allen got into trouble with the law. He was arrested for possession of cocaine. He pleaded guilty for drug trafficking and gave up the names of his fellow dealers in exchange for a lesser sentence. He was sentenced to three years of jail and got out on parole after serving 2 years and 4 months. Guess that one stint was enough to put him on the right path.
8. Lil Wayne
People often perceive rappers to have a bad boy image, and Lil Wayne definitely lies up to that stereotype. In 2007 he was arrested for possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded guilty to the possession of a weapon, and after some considerable delays he was sentenced to one year jail time, which he carried out on Riker’s Island. While there he was found by the correctional staff to be in possession of contraband, namely MP3 player, charger and headphones. He was eventually let out after serving 8 months of the aforementioned one year.
7. Kiefer Sutherland
Kiefer isn’t as much like his onscreen 24 character Jack Bauer as we would like to think he is. Kiefer has had his share of trouble with the law. In 2007 he was caught in Los Angeles for driving under the influence and performing poorly on a sobriety test. He had majorly exceeded the legal blood alcohol limit and was sentenced to 48 days of jail time. He planned on splitting his sentenced to be able to continue his shooting for 24, but Hollywood Writer’s Strike allowed him to complete his sentence in consecutive days.
6. Michelle Rodriguez
She is probably best known for her role as Letty in the Fast and Furious franchise. In real life, she is quite like the feisty character of Letty she portrays on screen. She has repeatedly seen the insides of a court house, for assaulting her roommate, and drunken driving and a hit and run. While shooting for Lost in Hawaii, she was caught by the local police multiple times for speeding. But it was ultimately being caught again for driving under the influence that got her 5 days of jail time. She was released on the very same day itself due to overcrowding.
5. Wesley Snipes
A very well known American actor, you probably recognize him from his role as the vampire hunter Blade from the Blade film trilogy; he has had his fair share of jail time. In 2006 Wesley was charged with six counts of income tax evasion by Uncle Sam. Snipes claimed that he was being unfairly targeted and was eventually acquitted on the felony count of defrauding the government. He began his three year sentence in the federal prison in 2010. In 2011 the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal and he was eventually released in April 2013.
4. Shia LaBeouf
This young star who is well known to all of us as Sam Witwicky from the Transformers trilogy has had his issues with the law. But his is probably one of the most interesting stories that there is. He has crossed paths with the law enforcement officers on number of occasions once for assaulting a neighbour, a drunken driving charge. But the most interesting was his arrest for refusing to leave a Walgreen’s store because he was drunk. The cops arrested him, and released him on bail, but not before he made them take a few extra mug shots because he was looking good in them. A typical case of your celebrity narcissism.
3. Chris Brown
We aren’t strangers to the allegations of domestic abuse against Chris Brown which got him a restraining order for his assaults on Rihanna. But that’s not all; he was also arrested for attacking a guy who tried to take a picture with him in Washington. All these issues mounting up, he voluntarily entered into rehab, but was thrown out of there too for violating internal rules. This landed him straight into a jail cell for 131 days. Guess some people can’t stay out of trouble.
2. Lindsay Lohan.
Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to controversy and troubles. The child star has been nick named The troubled star in recent times and aptly so. Busy attending Cannes film festival Lindsay missed a court hearing and for repeatedly violating her probation she was awarded a 90 day prison sentence. She ended up serving only 14 days in the jail and was eventually let out due to overcrowding. She was caught again for stealing jewellery from a store and was sentenced to 120 days in jail. But again due to overcrowding she got away with house arrest and an ankle bracelet.
1. Justin Bieber
After making a notable entry into the music scenes Justin Bieber is now trying his hand at legal troubles. He was recently arrested under the suspicions of driving under the influence, driving with an expired license and resisting arrest. He was charged with misdemeanour and vandalism. If he continues at this rate it won’t be long before his assault list becomes as long as his discography.
