2008 was a bad year all around, for all and especially for America, what with the wide scale global economic crisis. Everyone waited with held breaths for a wave of fresh air to come and relive us all. And this fresh air came in the form of President Barack Obama. Standing on the cusp of revolution, the entire world watched with awestruck eyes as America elected their new president, thereby realising Martin Luther king’s dream. It was the first time ever that the biggest superpower in the world had elected a black president. Obama’s famous “Yes we can” speech instilled the world over with hope, aspiration, that things were about to change, that better times were about to re-enter our lives. He in himself signified change, one that went in the positive direction. When the world all over needed hope most, it came in the form of this one man. So here’s a few things you didn’t know about the man who managed to revolutionize the world.

10. He doesn’t like ice cream

Long before he worked in the oval office and was in charge of running an entire nation, Obama worked various odd jobs. One such job was working for Basking-Robbins. Yes, you read that right. The ice-cream parlour that you find around the corner of almost every street, where you’ve enjoyed a nice cold ice cream with your family many times has been one of the places where the president of the biggest nation of the world once worked. The duration of his work period with Baskin-Robbins is publically unknown, but what is known is that as a result of it he has lost his taste for ice cream. This is one president who does not enjoy ice cream as a part of his dessert and you have Baskin-Robbins to blame for that.

9. He too had a nickname

Every single individual, at least once in their life time has been given a nickname. Whether we like it or we despise it with a vengeance, it often sticks with us for a very long time. Luckily or unluckily it might fade away fast or you’ll still be called by the same nickname when you’re old and gray. Same was the case with President Obama. And before you reach to conclusions that he had nicknames like “great leader” or something hi-fi, let me clarify, that his nickname was in fact simple and ordinary.  Yes, the great president had a nickname just like you or me. He was called as “Barry” in his younger days, and insisted on people using his nickname, rather than his entire name.

8. Office Romance

We’ve all seen that occasional movie or the TV show that has a budding office romance with a cute happy ending. Obama’s love story has similar overtones to it. It was June of 1989, and a young Obama was working as a summer associate with the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin. That is where he first laid his eyes on Michelle Robinson who would later go on to become his wife. She was his advisor at the firm and often joined him on many social group functions. Initially reclining his offer to date, she finally conceded, and the rest as they say, is history.

7.  Experimentation

Obama has often talked and written about his early childhood years which he spend in experimentation. He often used cocaine, marijuana and alcohol in his teenage years, to discover and find answers to existential questions like who he was as a person. He doesn’t talk about his experience to advocate the use of drug, but instead as a cautionary tale. His story stands as a testament for all those kids who think they cannot get rid of their drug habits, or there is no future left for them. His tale comes as purely inspirational and hopeful for millions of teenagers who feel lost and hopeless out there.

6. Story teller

Before he started his political career Obama was a story teller and a writer. He published a memoir called “Dreams from my father.” This memoir recounts the story of his life, up until his enrolment in Harvard Law School. It was first published on July 18th 1995. Upon his Senate Democratic Party victory in Illinois, in 2004, this book was republished. This new edition included a new preface by Obama himself, and his DNC keynote address.

5. Homeland

We’ve all seen or at least heard about this American TV show that has our interest peaked and has us attached to our TV sets for three seasons now. It’s often deemed as one of the best shows to grace the TV circuit. And if you don’t believe me then all you have to do is look at the plethora of awards it has received, like the Golden Globes and the Emmy’s.  But what makes this show all the more interesting is that Obama is a huge fan of this show as well. He admitted on a radio show once that he is an avid fan of Homeland. Looks like we all have something in common with the President of the United States.

He talks of his experience of living in Indonesian in his Memoir that he published. In that he talks about having tried local Indonesian delicacies, including dog meant, snake meat and roasted grasshopper. He describes the dog meat as being tough, snake meant tougher, and the grasshopper being as really crunchy.

Being a president can be a tough job. Sitting behind the oval desk in the white office you have important national and international matters to delegate over. The fate of the entire nation depends on you and things are never easy. But being a parent on top of being the President of a country can be tougher, but Obama makes it look like a piece of cake. He claims to never have missed a single parent teacher conference meeting, ever since taking his place behind the oval office. Proving that being a working parent doesn’t have to be a tough job, if the president can do it, so can you.

2.  He is a Potter head

We’ve all seen and been part of the phenomena that is Harry Potter, the fantasy books written by J.K Rowling needs no introduction at all. We’ve all either seen or read the books and fallen in love with it. The potter mania gripped the entire world all over, and even the president of the United States couldn’t escape from its clutches. Obama has admitted to being a huge fan of the Harry Potter series and reading it together with his youngest daughter. If only all presidents could be that way.

1.  Grammy Winner

What do the Beatles, Daft Punk, Eminem and Barack Obama all have in common? They’ve all been winners of the prestigious Grammy Awards. And Barack Obama has won not one, but two Grammy awards. He won a Grammy in 2005 for the audio version of his memoir, for the category of the best spoken world album. Before him two other US presidents have won the same award. Obama is definitely a multi talented president.
