10. Chinese whispers
‘The more, the merrier’ is the mantra of this game. ‘Chinese whispers’ is one of the most common games played during get-togethers. The crowd is supposed to form a circle and one person starts off with a sentence, by whispering it into the ears of the adjacent person. The sentence could be anything, either a joke or a tongue twister or a short story. The rule of the game being, the sentence/phrase won’t be repeated so the receiver is expected to whisper whatever he has heard into the next person’s ears. The chain goes on till the message reaches the last man. He is supposed to say the message out loud. And then the fun begins! There is every possibility of the sentence being mutilated beyond recognition. Perhaps what had started as a mere sentence would end up being just a word or vice versa along with accusations among one another, peals of laughter and of course memories.
A famous card game that is played with a specially printed deck. The players are expected to form a circle and the game goes in a clockwise direction. The deck has 108 cards with 25 each in colors red, blue, green and yellow with numbers from 0-9 ; ’skip’; ‘draw two’ ; ‘reverse’ marked on it. An addition to this, there are eight more cards, four with ‘wild’ marked on them and four with ‘wild draw four’ marked on it. The game kicks off with 7 cards dealt to each player and an opening card is picked up from the undistributed pile. When a ‘skip’ card is presented, the player in the next player in the sequence loses a turn, ‘draw two’ makes the next player draw two cards from the pile and loses a turn , ‘reverse’ sets the game going in the opposite direction(anti-clockwise) , ‘wild’ enables the person who had presented to change the color code of the game(suppose the color that is being played is red, with the help of the wild card the person can change it to either blue, yellow or green) and finally ‘Wild Draw Four’ is a little similar to the wild card and has been accused of ruining many friendships, because the next player in sequence is supposed to draw four cards and misses a turn. When a player is left with just one card he’s expected to say ‘UNO’ out aloud. In case the player fails to say ‘UNO’ and the fellow players catch him, then as a penalty he has to draw two cards. Finally, the player who gets rid of his last card is hailed as the winner.

A minimum of three players is a must. Players are asked to pick up between answering a question truthfully or performing a dare, which are set by the other players. Usually embarrassing questions are asked if truth is opted, and ridiculous tasks are set as dares. A popular game among teenagers and adults, the game has rules like a player cannot choose truth or dare twice in a row. A must try game if you are among the ones who are up for some notorious fun!
A game of trickery, bluff is a card game where the players have to get rid of their cards by lying about it. A challenge is usually made by players calling out the name of the game, and the player who fails to do so will have to pick up all the cards . For example if player number 1 announces that he has an ace card, but in reality he has a spade card and if player number 2 gets suspicious and says bluff then plauer number one has to pick up all the cards that have been put forth by other players as a penalty for bluffing. 6. Zulu Zulu
A funny game where a player is blindfolded is dared to walk up to a point overcoming various obstacles with the help of others’ directions. Instead of instructing the blindfolded player with right and left directions, the other players use the words ‘Zu’ and ‘lu’. The players are supposed to create confusion by shouting both zu-lu thus stopping the hapless player from reaching the designated point. Though juvenile, the game promises a lot of fun!
Another game where the group is supposed to form a circle, chits are made with ‘killer’ and ‘police’ written on them, along with several blank notes. The notes are to be folded, shuffled and each player is handed over a chit. The one who has got the ‘killer’ chit is expected to wink at others, while the ones who get winked at are supposed to say ‘I am dead’ out loud. The one who lands up with the ‘police’ note has to track down the killer. Whoever gets their hands on the ‘police’ note has to declare that he/she is the police; the killer has to carefully hunt down the others without being caught, while the policeman has to hook the killer before he kills everybody. This game is about convincing others but by lying to them and also about figuring out the ones who are lying. The game is set up in a backdrop of a once peaceful town which has been invaded by the dark forces of corruption-the Mafia. The game is played in to phases i.e. “day” and “night”,where during the day the townspeople discuss and debate about who is the mafia and will banish the person who is the prime suspect and the person with the highest votes, while at night the mafia secretly slays one of the townspeople.
The townspeople have to appoint an inspector whose mission will be to put an end to the mafia. The game is best when played in odd numbers like 9, 11, and 13. The players are divided into 2 groups i.e. the ‘mafia’ and the ‘townspeople’.
Initially everybody has to guess as who might be the Mafia,so the players have to debate on who they think is the mafia, a lot of fights and name calling may occur at this stage,so just take it easy. Then the person with the highest number of votes is voted out and is called the Moderator.
The scene in the night goes like this, all the players close their eyes and the Moderator tells the mafia to open their eyes. The mafia silently and unanimously zero down on one ‘victim’ and then close their eyes again. The day scene is followed with the Moderator asking the players to open their eyes and tells them who died in the night. Then a discussion is held with the players discussing over the mafia’s identity and then,if the accused has more than half of the votes against him, then he is eliminated.
The game goes on till one of the teams have been reduced, i.e. if the mafia are caught then the townspeople win and if the mafia equals to the number of townspeople, then the mafia get to kiss victory. The game is about betrayal, and also hones one skill to act innocent and lie ruthlessly about their identity.
1. I’ve never..
Get-togethers can never be complete without getting tipsy. Though an embarrassing game, this one is a great hit amongst friends. Each player has to make a statement beginning with “I’ve never” for example, if you have never sneaked out in the night you’d say “I’ve never sneaked out in the night”, so anyone across the table who has sneaked out in the night must drink.
Needless to say, the game gets better when everybody gets drunker.
Hope this list comes handy when you’re organizing a get-together.
